A Wonderful Friend
Lulu — A Life Full of Love and Adventure 2012–2026 There are some dogs who simply live in a house, and then there are dogs who become part of the very fabric of a family. Lulu was most definitely one of the latter. For fourteen wonderful years, Lulu was at the heart of Philip and Sarah’s family. She was their companion, their walking partner, their source of entertainment and a constant presence in the lives of Jack, Aoife and Fiona. It is difficult to imagine the family without Lulu because, for so long, she was simply always there. Her passing has left everyone devastated. Fourteen years is a wonderful age for a much-loved dog, but somehow that doesn't make saying goodbye any easier. The longer they are with us, the more completely they become woven into our everyday lives. Their routines become our routines, their favourite places become part of the home, and their little habits become things we barely notice — until suddenly they are no longer there. And Lulu certainly had her habits. She was a ball of energy who loved nothing more than getting out for a walk, particularly in the woods around Cork. For Lulu, though, a walk was never simply a walk. It was an expedition. That magnificent nose of hers was constantly at work. Somewhere, long before anyone else had the slightest idea, Lulu knew there was a rabbit nearby. Or perhaps a pheasant. Once she picked up the scent, there was little chance of persuading her that anything else in the world mattered. Every rustle in the undergrowth demanded investigation. Every promising patch of bushes might contain the most important rabbit ever to have lived. The rabbits and pheasants of Cork may, it has to be said, be sleeping a little more soundly these days. Those walks provided so many happy memories. There will be paths through Cork's woods where the family will instinctively remember Lulu disappearing into the undergrowth or emerging triumphantly after another completely unsuccessful but enormously enthusiastic pursuit. That is one of the wonderful things about sharing our lives with a dog. They leave memories behind in places. A woodland trail is no longer simply a trail. It becomes Lulu's walk. At home, however, the energetic woodland explorer had another side entirely. When winter arrived, Lulu knew exactly where she wanted to be , draped around the lighting stove, occupying her favourite spot and soaking up every possible bit of heat. After all that exploring, chasing and investigating, she understood the considerable attraction of a warm fire. It was simply her place. This winter, that space beside the stove will inevitably feel different. At first it may feel painfully empty. But hopefully, as time passes, seeing it will bring back memories of Lulu stretched out contentedly in the warmth, completely at home and surrounded by the people she loved. Perhaps the greatest gift Lulu gave the family was simply her presence through thousands of ordinary days. Dogs don't need special occasions. They don't care whether it is Christmas Day or an uneventful Tuesday afternoon. They are simply delighted to be with their people. Lulu was there for mornings and evenings, busy days and quiet ones, good times and difficult ones. She watched Jack, Aoife and Fiona grow and became part of their childhood and their family story. Life changed in countless ways during those fourteen years, but Lulu remained one of the constants. She knew her family. She knew their voices, their footsteps and the routines of the household. She knew when a walk might be happening, where the food was kept and, undoubtedly, how to get her own way when circumstances required it. Most importantly, Lulu knew that she belonged. As the years passed, the boundless energy naturally began to slow. Walks became a little easier and sleep a little more attractive. But somewhere inside the older Lulu was always that young dog in the Cork woods — nose to the ground, convinced there was something fascinating just around the next corner. That is the Lulu to remember. Lulu racing through the woods. Lulu following a scent. Lulu tormenting the rabbits and pheasants. Lulu arriving home tired and satisfied after another adventure. Lulu stretched out beside the stove. Lulu surrounded by her family. In the days after losing a beloved pet, their absence seems to be everywhere. You look automatically towards their favourite place. You listen for familiar footsteps. You remember feeding times and walks. These tiny everyday moments can be the hardest of all. But that sadness exists because the relationship mattered. Lulu wasn't simply a pet. She was a member of this family for fourteen years, and she leaves behind an enormous collection of memories. In time, the sadness will begin to make room for gratitude — gratitude for all those walks, the laughter and companionship, and especially that Jack, Aoife and Fiona had the experience of growing up with Lulu beside them. There is something
